Any excuse to talk about books...
30 Day Book Challenge
Day 01-Your favorite Book
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. Not for anything in particular, just the characters and storyline keep me coming back to it again and again.
Day 02-Least Favorite Book
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I was forced to read it in grade 7. I hated that book with a passion.
Day 03-A Book that completely surprised you (bad/good)
Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor. Fantastic story, completely not my usual style. It blew me away.
Day 04- A Book that reminds you of home
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This is my childhood all wrapped up in one book - so classically Canadian, about imagination and rebellion and history...
Day 05- A Non-fiction book that you actually enjoyed
I enjoy lots of non-fiction books, I read them all the time. One that was surprisingly good, however, was Gods, Graves and Scholars by C.W. Ceram. Unlike most other archaeology books, it wasn't dry or dull, it read somewhat like an Indiana Jones novel.
Day 06- A Book that makes you cry
I'm drawing a complete blank on this one.
Day 07- A Book that’s hard to read
Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. It's not the length of it that's intimidating, it's the pages and pages and pages the characters spend not doing anything or going anywhere...
Day 08- An unpopular book you believe should be a Best-Seller
The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. It's hard to pinpoint an "unpopular" book, but this one isn't very well known, at least here in Canada, and it should be. One of my favorite teen books.
Day 09- A Book you’ve read more than once
I reread my favorite books all the time; it's comforting, and I have a short memory. However, I think the one that I keep coming back to recently has to be Moon Called by Patricia Briggs.
Day 10- The first book you remember reading
It was a Sesame Street book called The Monster at the End of this Book. I loved Grover. It was also one of the first English books I owned. I still have it somewhere.
Day 11- The Book that made you fall in love with reading
The Rowan by Anne McCaffrey. I got bored with the teen section of the library and started wandering the stacks of English books (there wasn't much, it was a small library and mostly French). The cover caught my eye, I borrowed it, and fell head-first into sci-fi/fantasy. I must have reread this book dozens of times, over and over, fascinated. It opened up a new world, and I devoured everything else by Anne McCaffrey I could get my hands on, then moved on to other classic sci/fi/fantasy.
Day 12- A book so emotionally draining you couldn’t complete it or had to set aside for a bit
The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman. I'm currently reading this one, and I've been doing so slowly, in spurts. Despite the relatively thick skin I've built up working at the Holocaust Museum, there are words and especially some cartoon panels that are so visceral, so shocking, it's hard to get over. A brilliant, brilliant work.
Day 13- Favorite childhood book
A compilation called 365 Bedtime Stories. Some were traditional, but most weren't. It was illustrated too, so I loved to flip through it. I still have it.
Day 14- Book that should be on hs/college required reading list
The Orphan's Tales by Catherynne Valente. A beautiful book that forces you to look beyond the real world, reevaluate everything, and teaches you some nice, long words to boot.
Day 15- Favorite book dealing with foreign culture
I read a lot of "foreign" books, but I think my favorite has been the autobiography Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin. I also saw the movie, but the book was far more visceral.
Day 16- Favorite book turned movie
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. One of my favorite movies of all times.
Day 17- Book turned movie and completely desecrated
So many options here... but I'd have to say that turning the Sailor Moon manga into the awful, awful American TV show was pretty bad. The Japanese version is a bit better, but the manga has such a graceful, marvelous, almost minimalist style that just can't be echoed by an animated cartoon.
Day 18- A Book You can’t find on shelves anymore that you love
Exiles: volume 1 by Melanie Rawn. It's come and gone a few times, and my copy is so terribly worn that I'll have to replace it before it goes completely out of print, but I loved this series from the bottom of my heart. Which is why it upset me so much that the author has announced she won't be finishing it. I understand the pressure, I understand the writer's block and intensity and everything... I'm just so terribly sad that I won't get to see what's next for these characters.
Day 19- A Book that changed your mind about a particular subject (non-fiction)
the Fables series by Bill Willingham. I was never much for graphic novels or fairy tales, but this changed my mind on both counts.
Day 20-A Book you would recommend to an ignorant/racist/closed minded person
This one makes no sense. If someone wanted to know about the Holocaust, however, I would recommend War and Genocide by Doris Bergen.
Day 21-A guilty pleasure book
the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Unlike the Anita Blake series, this one makes no pretense about what it is. I don't read them often, but it's a nice change.
Day 22-Favorite Series
The Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey, hands down. I devour these, formulaic and simplistic and happily ever after as they are.
Day 23- Favorite Romance Novel
I don't read romance novels, it's kind of a rule of mine... but I will read books with romance in them. My favorite romantic book has to be The Jewel of St. Petersburg by Kate Furnivall.
Day 24 - A Book you later found out the Author lied about
??? That's a pretty specific category. How about Orson Scott Card? Loved Ender's Game, then found out he was a pretty objectionable human being...
Day 25-Favorite Autobiographical/Biographical book
Funnily enough, the one I enjoyed most was the Res Gestae by Augustus. My geeky classicist side is coming out again. There's just something about reading a list of his achievements, as he defined them, and reading between the lines... "Look at what I did! I'm special!" LOL.
Day 26-A Book you wish would be written
Exiles volume 3 by Melanie Rawn. Enough said.
Day 27- A Book you would write if you had all the resources
... I am writing. No excuses.
Day 28- A Book you wish you never read
Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. Yes, I read it. I then had to strongly resist burning it.
Day 29- An Author that you completely avoid/hate wont read
Steven Erikson. No matter how many fantasy enthusiasts tell me he's the best thing ever, I just cannot seem to get farther than a few pages in before complete and extreme boredom sets in.
Day 30 - An author that you will read whatever they put out
Seanan Maguire - and I proved this by picking up Discount Armageddon, the book with the single most embarrassing cover of all time. It was a fun, ridiculous book and I don't regert it.
