Feb. 5th, 2003 10:41 pmbecause i'm a sucker for any opportunity to browse my books... (that, and i couldn't find half the books i wanted to put in, cause i don't actually own them... the pains of only having started accumulating my book library a few years ago...) so i've only got 5.
"He stands like a statue, perfect in arrogance. Because his people love bright colors he wears only gray and black; because they revere comfort, he is dressed uncomfortably. His people are flamboyant, and display their bodies with aggressive sexuality; he is entirely concealed by his costume. Tight-fitting gloves and boots cover his extremities and a high collar conceals his neck. His skin is as pale as human skin can be, but even that is not enough - cosmetics have been layered over his natural complexion until a mask of white conceals his skin from the prying eyes of commoners. Only his hair is uncovered, a rich mass of true black, as eloquent as a crown in proclaiming his right to power. It is moderate in length because another people, enemy to his own, wear their hair long; his beard and mustache are likewise traditional - the men of that other race do not have facial hair.
He is very tired. And he will not show it."
---- "In Conquest Born" by C. S. Friedman
"Not twenty minutes has passed since you left me here in the cafe, since I said No to your request, that I would never write out for you the story of my mortal life, how I became a vampire - how I came upon Marius only years after he had lost his human life.
Now here I am with your notebook open, using one of the sharp pointed eternal ink pens you left me, delighted at the sensuous press of the black ink into the expensive and flawless white paper."
---- "Pandora" by Anne Rice
"I have to.
I've been fighting it all night. I'm going to lose. My battle is as futile as a woman feeling the first pangs of labor and deciding it's an inconvenient time to give birth. Nature wins out. It always does."
----- "Bitten" by Kelley Armstrong
"LES COMEDIENS:
Des milliards de males
Des milliards de femelles
Et des milliards de batards plus tard
Apres des visites a la lune
Et moult entorses a la loi
Les vivants survivant au bilan des guerres
Ne nous disent rien de plus
Que ce que nous savons deja
Que nous ne savons pas encore comment."
----- "Cabaret Neiges Noires"
"Last night I dreamt of Ysrthgrathe.
And when I woke, the stench of death and corruption still lingered in the air."
----- "Worlds Without End" by Caroline Specter
